Technique
All paintings are acrylic on canvas. The surfaces are highly worked and have a weathered appearance. This results from a rather labor-intensive work process involving an electric sander, gel medium, Ajax, water, rubbing, and applying and removing many, many layers of paint. At the end of which a coat of gloss, acrylic polyurethane is applied.
End result is a very flat surface that resembles and feels somewhat like a glossy encaustic with considerable apparent depth.
I would also mention that these photos do not do the pieces justice. They really shimmer and have a depth and color that does not translate to these pages. If you are within my locale and would like to see them, please contact me amd I can arrange to meet with you.
Statement
What I am trying to convey in my work is a sense of mystery, loss, beauty, a general sense of incomprehension and a feeling of presence. I try to do this from a non-sentimental perspective and within a framework that is for the most part neither entirely abstraction nor figuration.
Influences/inspirations
I feel engaged within the history of art ranging from prehistoric to contemporary. Some of the influences and inspirations I particularly feel an immediacy to are Sally Mann, Roger Ballen, Denis Johnson, Caravaggio, Joseph Bueys, bad art, outsider art, Constable, Ornette Coleman, Moroccan art/design , Andy Kauffman, Tokyo street fashion, Cedell Davis, Titian, Matthew Barney, Bruce Nauman, J.M.W. Turner, Atget, Renaissance art, imagery derived from Catholicism, Mozart, Arvo Part, Cormac McCarthy, Flannery O'Connor, The Children's Crusade, Giotto, Neo Rauch and more.
